Side Tables

Having a few smaller tables dotted around is a great way to allow a bit more storage and utility in the living room. Most people have one or two by the sides of their couch or favourite armchair, and they make great places to have a lamp and to rest your drink safely and within easy reach. Side tables are also a fantastic option if you don't think you've got enough room for a full-sized coffee table – they serve mostly the same purpose, but take up much less space.

You'll be delighted to know that there's no such thing as a standard side table. Because they're always quite small, they can have quite adventurous designs but will never look too over the top. It's a philosophy that certainly inspires our collection – as you'll see, there are no limits to the imagination with these little wonders.

Let's start with the traditional look. A simple rustic wooden side table will fit with most rooms and complements all but the most modern furniture designs, so you almost certainly can't go wrong with one of these. They're available in square, rectangular, circular and oval shapes –  the last two are perfect for fitting in a curved bay window next to a couch as they don't sit at a peculiar angle.

More modern designs have metal frames and tend to be more minimalistic because of it. That's not to say you can't bring a bit of glamour into your side table – a chrome-plated metal frame is never going to hide away in the corner.

Could you do with a bit of extra storage? Some of our side tables come with a shelf, drawer or both, so they can double up as somewhere to stow things away and somewhere to house your lamp and cup of tea.

One important thing to note is the height. Your side table, as the name suggests, will probably sit beside your armchair or sofa. That means the height of the arms is really important when you're making your choice. It's usually best to have your side table just a couple of centimetres lower than the height of the arm for maximum convenience. Too low and you'll have to stretch to reach your cup with every sip, and nobody wants that. Too high and it can dominate the furniture, as well as running the risk of being knocked over by an elbow.

So once you've decided on the height, style and storage, dive into our wonderful collection of side tables.
